Knaresborough to wit…

The Court for Sovereign Lord George the third by the grace of God of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King of Record held for his Forest and Liberty of Knaresborough aforesaid within his Castle therein on Wednesday the ninth day of July in the forty sixth year of his reign and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six. Before the most Noble William Duke of Devonshire High Steward, by George Morton, Gentleman, Understeward and Clerk of the Court there.

Forest. Be it remembered that Joseph Dowgill of Menwith with Darley in the County of York, Yeoman and Edward Spence and Joseph Spence both of Birstwith in the said county , Yeoman out of Court the twenty fourth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five surrendered into the hands of our Sovereign Lord the King by the hands of James Collins, Gentleman Under steward or Clerk of the Courts of the said Forest all that said piece or parcel of land being part of a certain Close called the Croft situated and being in Menwith with Darley containing in length from the highway to the top of a field belonging to Michael Benson one hundred and seventeen feet and in breadth twelve feet and also all that one other parcel of land part of the said Close and adjoining the said last mentioned parcel of land containing in length from the lower North East corner to the West one hundred and twelve feet six inches and on the high or South East corner to the West one hundred and seven feet and six inches, in breadth fifty four feet and which will leave one foot and six inches behind the present wall which said premises are under the annual value of twenty shillings together with all rights appurtences to the same belonging , and all them and each and every of their Estate Right, Tithe, Trust and Interest in or to the same pieces or parcels of land hereby surrendered to the use and behoof of the said Joseph Dowgill, Edward Spence and John Spence the younger of Birstwith aforesaid Yeoman the said Joseph Spence and Robert Walker of Menwith with Darley Yeoman their heirs and assigns for ever. Upon trust and to and for the intent and purpose that a Meeting House may be erected and built in and upon the said pieces or parcels of land hereby surrendered or some part thereof and that a Burial place may be made therein for the use and benefit of the Friendly Society called Quakers by the tenants and services therefore due of right accustomed according to the custom of the said Forest. And they the said Joseph Dowgill, Edward Spence, John Spence the younger Joseph Spence and Robert Walker are admitted tenants thereof accordingly.
