Benjamin Walker (1799) died in Darley, Yorkshire, on 14 Feb. 1855. This receipt records the work done by George Ingram who oversaw the advertising and sale of animal live stock, farm and drapery implements on behalf of Benjamin’s Executors.

he Leeds Mercury advertisement for 17th March, 1855 referred to reads as follows:-Menwith-with-Darley, near Ripley, Yorkshire:- Important sale of six horses, thirty-eight beasts, twenty-one sheep, the whole of the Farm Implements, etc.

Mr. George Ingram begs to announce that he has received instructions from the Executors of the late Mr. Benjamin Walker, to sell by auction at the Lawns Farm, on Monday and Tuesday the 19th and 20th days of March, 1855.

THE following very valuable well bread STOCK, CROPS etc., Comprising 2 grey draught horses, aged 5 and 6 years respectively; bay horse, rising 4 years old, fit for harness ; bay mare rising 7 years old, fit for saddle or harness; grey brood mare, in foal fit for coaching or hunting purposes; bay colt foal, out of the brood mare, by Venture; 1 fat cow, 2geld cows, forward in condition; 5 present calving cows, 8 off laying calving heifers, 4 back-end calving heifers, 6 heifer stirks, 1 two year old bull, 2 bull stirks, 4 heifer calves, 3 bull calves, 14 well bred ewes in lamb, and with lambs at foot, 4 gimmer hogs, 3 superior well-bred hogs.

One acre of turnips and a quantity of oats in sheaf to be taken off the premises; 1 broad wheel’d and 2 narrow wheeled carts, 1 pair of broad wheels and axeltree. 1 iron plough, 1 wood plough with wheels by Baker of Castle Donnington, one ribbing plough, 2 pairs of patient harrows, swingletrees, two turnip cutters, box fan, turnip drill, straw cutter, stone and wood rollers, scrufler, double and single gearing for six harrows, wheel barrows, 4 ladders, pig troughs, sheep rack. cow tubs, a quantity of wood cut for farm purposes, several hundred weights of old iron, and the whole of the farm implements, about three tons of rape cake; also tubs, bottles, casks and a large assortment of goods connected with the grocery and drapery business too numerous to particularise. The live farming stock will be sold on the first day. Sale to commence each day at ten-o’clock in the forenoon. Punctuality is earnestly requested as the lots are numerous and valuable.
