John Walker and Sarah Chappell marriage document, 1714

The marriage took place at the Quaker Meeting House in the Township of Rastrick

in the County of York at Monthly Meeting on 12 Jan. (the 11th month) 1714.

1714. For as much as John Walker of Stancliffe in the parish of Battley in the County of York, Clothier, and Sarah Chappel daughter of Richard Chappel of Bradley in the parish of Huddersfield and County aforesaid have published their intention of marriage with each other at several of the Meetings of the people called Quakers according to the good order issued amongst those whose precedings therein after a deliberate consideration thereof Consent of relations being first had the parties allso upon enquiry being found clear from all others in relation to marriage, was according to Gospell order; allowed of by the said meeting.

Therefore these are to Certify all whom it may Concern that for the full determining and accomplishment of their said intentions, They the said John Walker and Sarah Chappel this twelfth day of the eleventh Month in the year one thousand Seven hundred and fourteen openly appeared in a public and Solemn assembly of the aforesaid people at their Public meeting house in the township of Rastrick and County aforesaid where the said John Walker according to the example of the holy men of God recorded in Scriptures of Truth taking the said Sarah Chappel by the hand said as followeth.

Friends, in the presence of God before this assembly I take this my Friend Sarah Chappel to be my wife, promising to be unto her through God’s assistance a Loving and Faithfull husband till it shall please the Lord by death to separate us, or words to this effect. And the said Sarh Chapple did likewise or words to this effect. And the said Sarah Chappel did likewise in a solomn manner, declare as followeth. Friends, in the presence of God and before this assembly, I take this my Friend John Walker to be my husband promising to be to him a loving and obedient wife till it shall please God by death to separate us or words to this effect.

And they the said John Walker and Sarah Chappel (now after the Law and custom of Marriage Sarah Walker) as a further Confirmation and for the absolutely ratifying and Consummation of the above said Marriage have also hereunto subscribed their names the day and year above written.
